The word missions literally means to send. The Oxford dictionary defines missions as “a vocation or calling to go into the world to spread faith”, and outreach as “involvement in the community”. You won’t find the word missions or missionary in your Bible, but Scripture certainly talks about being sent into the world to preach the Good News of Christ to anyone and everyone we meet.

In the verses below, we see that God sent Jesus and Jesus has sent the church.

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:17
“As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.” John 17:18

Our goal for missions in the church and here at FBCO is to listen to and obey this calling to be sent- Personally, Locally, Nationally, and Globally.

Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’”

Acts 1:8 “’But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’”

Acts 11:27-30 “Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius). So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. And they did so, sending it to the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.”
